Village Passes New Law Governing Motorized Scooters/Electric Bikes

The Village Board of Trustees passed a new law on May 19 governing the use of Motorized Scooters and Electric Bikes in the Village of Stillwater.

REGULATIONS OF THIS LAW INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Operators of electric scooters, motorized scooters or electric bicycles shall comply at all times with the provisions of the Vehicle and Traffic Law.

Electric scooters, motorized scooters, or electric bikes:

  • are not permitted at any time on any Village of Stillwater property that is not open to the public, such as the Village Wastewater Treatment Plant on Rundle Lane or Village Water Treatment Facility on Ferry Lane.
  • Shall not be operated at any time on any public sidewalk in the Village of Stillwater.
  • Shall not be parked in a manner that interferes with vehicular traffic in a public roadway or with the free passage of pedestrians on a sidewalk.

ENFORCEMENT AND PENALTIES:

A person violating this Local Law shall be subject to a minimum fine of $50 and maximum fine of $100 for the first violation, a minimum fine of $100 and a maximum fine of $150 for a second violation within a 30 day period after the first violation, and a minimum fine of $150 and maximum fine of $250 for each for each subsequent violation within a 30 day period of any prior violation. A police officer shall only issue a summons for a violation of this section by a person less than 16 years of age to the parent or guardian of such person.
